Fans of Indian series have great reasons be excited ahead of the release of Inside Edge, the first Indian original web series by Amazon Prime Video India in collaboration with Excel Media & Entertainment. The series unearths the ‘dirty games’ behind the passion, courage and love of cricket. Amazon has brought together some of India’s greatest actors to facilitate the exposition of the conflicting interests of the very people who are entrusted with managing ‘the gentlemen’s game’.
Inside Inside Edge is a story of a T20 cricket franchise called Mumbai Mavericks. With an almost realistic introduction, the series syncs the audience with cricket. It then takes viewers through the ups and downs of Mumbai Mavericks as it participates in the Powerplay League. It’s an incredibly immersive and entertaining journey through all the drama, power, money, sex, greed and corruption that are used as means to various ends in the world of sports. It’s set in a background so real that the audience can almost relate some of the events with current news.
With India’s best talent on board, Inside Edge brings to the theatre what any fan would wish for in an Indian original series. It’s using the tagline “Witness the game, behind the game”, implying that viewers should expect a crystal clear from-the-inside look of one of the most popular games.
The series is directed by Karan Anshuman, one of Bollywood’s biggest names. It stars Vivek Oberoi, the menacing mastermind, Richa Chadha (the team’s owner), Tanuj Virwani (team’s star player), Siddhant Chaturvedi (the rookie), Angad Bedi (team captain), and Sanjay Suri (the team’s coach). Sayoni Gupta, Sarah Jane Dias, and Amit Sial also play critical roles in Inside Edge.
The trailer of the 10-episode series was released on Thursday, June 15. It’s a 40-second peep into the craze of Inside Edge, and it has captivated the online audience by claiming for itself more than three lakh YouTube views. It provides a taste of the all-consuming cocktail of passion, lust, greed, deceit, fame, money and everything else that the powerful men and women use to gain control of the sport. This teaser is quite unashamed about how team owners and other stakeholders in the management of Mumbai Mavericks crumble players in their Powerplay fights.
During the launching of the series, Ritesh Sidwani of Excel Media &Entertainment; enthusiastically explained that Excel intends to counter the changing pattern of consuming content by tapping the web series segment. “This is the space to be in”, he said.
The director and country head of Amazon Prime Video India, Nitesh Kripalani, expressed the aim of Amazon Prime as changing the way content creators create content for customers and how Indian customers consume premium entertainment. By conglomerating the expertise and experience of leading Indian content creators and writers, Inside Edge marks the beginning of “new, bold, and original content in India”, Nitesh indicated.
Inside Edge is so far the biggest attempt to challenge the rising popularity of Netflix. By producing an Indian original series that’s set to be launched in over 200 countries across the globe, Amazon India and Excel Entertainment have gone the extra mile. Inside Edge starts streaming on Amazon Prime from July 10, 2017.
