Indian political thriller ‘Madras Cafe’ – which was released on August 23, 2013 – has been permitted to be shown in theaters of Tamil Nadu in Hindi and Tamil languages. The permission has been granted by the Censor Board, but the shows have been stopped due to fears of protests from Tamil activists.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) gave the green signal to the movie, which is directed by Shoojit Sircar and gave the Tamil version an U/A certificate. However, so far no bookings have been done in multiplexes or single theaters. One of the senior members of The Theatre Owners’ Association, while talking to reporters said, “The decision to release the film has been given to individual theatres. Since the government has not banned the film, the theatres are free to screen. But if they feel they might face the wrath of protesters, then we can’t do anything.”
The movie is based on the Sri Lankan civil war, which also depicted the 1991 assassination of the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The movie received more attention when Tamil activists alleged that it depicts the LTTE cadres as terrorists.
Multiplexes are now fearing that running the movie will make the current situation even worse.
