Ek Deewana Tha Movie Review – Lacks spark?

Bollywood Garam: British actress Amy Jackson has announced her entry in to the Indian film industry with the movie ‘Ek Deewana Tha’ opposite actor Prateik Babbar. Filmmaker Gautham Menon has come up with the remake of the Tamil movie ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’.

The story is about an engineering graduate from Mumbai, Sachin, played by Prateik, who is in love with films and belongs to a middle class family. Sachin falls in love with Jesse, played by Amy, who is a south Indian Christian but belongs to an orthodox family, who do not even watch films.

Sachin is yet to take off in his career, so he gets busy to woo Jesse and hopes that some day even Jesse will start loving him.

The movie is slow and the characters for the role have to be intense enough to keep the curiosity of the audience maintained. And here is where the movie fails. Jackson lacks the sensuality that every south Indian girl is blessed with and fails to create the oomph required for this particular role. Even the couple’s chemistry hasn’t worked as the spark is somewhere missing.

The only thing that works is A R Rahman’s music which manages to mesmerise the audience. Maybe the director should have given a suitable title to the movie as it fails to depict the word ‘Deewana’ in terms of madness for love.

Bollywood Garam Movie Review: We will give it a 2/5, the only saving grace being the fact that Amy has taken a brave leap into Bollywood – even though she is not well versed with the language and the fact that Prateik is a great actor. The music score is noteworthy, but the producers and directors should have added more life to the characters and not relied on advertising hype to promote the movie – since the movie seems pretty flat in contrast to the publicity fizz before.
