With Nagraj Manjule’s Marathi film, Sairat turning into a record breaking success, the director has made up his mind to foray into Bollywood. The director will soon start shooting for his Bollywood directorial debut and has roped in Amitabh Bachchan to play the lead role! Reportedly, this film will be a social drama and will feature Big B as a patriarch with grey shades.
It will definitely be exciting to see Nagraj Manjule and Amitabh Bachchan come together for the first time! Sr. Bachchan is all praises for the young director and even took to his Twitter account to congratulate him on the blockbuster success of his 2016 film, Sairat. He even sent the director a hand written letter and has often been called a ‘genius director’ by the superstar on social media.
But that’s not all – both the director and Mr. Bachchan share a mutual admiration for each other. In a recent interview, the director revealed that he ventured into films only because of the inspiration Amitabh Bachchan’s work gave him! Manjule revealed that he decided to become a director after he had enacted a few scenes of Big B from his cult film, Sholay, in college.
Moving on to the yet-to-be-titled film, reportedly Nagraj Manjule started working on the script shortly after the completion of Sairat and decided to show it to Mr. Bachchan after working on it for a year and a half! Manjule initially planned on writing the script in Marathi, but later went ahead and penned it in Hindi instead. At present, the story line and rest of the cast are strictly being kept under wraps.
A source quoted to Mumbai Mirror, “Nagraj worked on it for a year-and-a-half before taking the script to Bachchan in January. The project was locked soon after.”
Shooting for Manjule’s Bollywood directorial debut is expected to begin by the end of 2017. While the film is expected to hit theaters by winter 2018. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting collaboration exclusively on Bollywood Garam!
