Jagjit Singh loses battle with brain hemorrhage, dies on October 10

Bollywood Garam: Veteran Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh passed away after on Monday morning, October 10, 2011, suffering from brain hemorrhage at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. The singer was 70 years old and was admitted to the hospital on 23rd September, after which the doctors had performed an emergency surgery.

Singh had gone through two surgeries and was on life support. A week before, the ghazal singer was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of Lilavati Hospital.

Jagjit and his wife Chitra had entered the world of Ghazals together in the 80s and were known as a popular ghazal singing duo. Singh has also been awarded with the Padma Bhushan and has sung several ghazals in Hindi, Urdu and Nepali languages.

The singer was born in Rajasthan as Jagmohan but was raised in a Sikh family, where he was christened as Jagjit Singh. Singh’s talent was recognized by his father, who had sent him a blind teacher Pandit Chagganlal Sharma. Actor Anupam Kher said that Jagjit’s death has come like a shock and is a huge loss for the music industry. Jagjit was planning to team up with Gulzar for an album that would be based on the poems and letters of Mirza Ghalib. Some of Singh’s popular ghazals include, ‘Hoshwalo Ko Khabar Kya’, ‘Mere Naam Ka Koi Aur Hai and ‘Meri Zindagi Kisi Aur Ki’.
