Dangal has earned more from the China market than it did domestically in just 10 days

Aamir Khan starrer Dangal is a film greatly treasured by Indian audiences. In domestic box office collections alone, the film made over 387 crores. Now that Dangal has made its way overseas, the total revenue for the film is steadily rising, and has officially crossed the 1000-crore mark! This is only the second Indian film in history to break this record, after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.

Dangal is now being screened in China, and audiences there are loving the movie that is based on a true story. In just ten days since its release in Chinese cinemas, the film has also grossed 382 crores. Indian film trade analyst, Taran Adarsh tweeted out the achievement, saying: “#Dangal – CHINA – Week 2[updated]… Fri $6.21 mn Sat: $13.86 mn Sun: $12.53 mn 10-day total: $59.74 mn [382.69 cr] in *Weekend 2* in China… UNPRECEDENTED… Weekend 2 data follows.” While Ramesh Bala sent out his own tweet, saying, “#Dangal is all set to become da 1st Indian Biggie which will hv its #India Nett be overtaken by an Overseas single mkt gross – #China 385 Cr.”

This is the first time that an Indian film has been so successful with Chinese audiences. Dangal is the real life story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a wrestler who gives up his passion to bring up his family. Determined to have his off-spring win titles that he never had the opportunity of achieving, he begins training his two daughters, Geeta and Babita. After personal struggles, hardships and near failure, Geeta wins her first major match, earning the gold based on her father’s training. Babita, too, wins at the Commonwealth Games 2014, and becomes the first female wrestler to qualify for the Olympics. The story takes on a number of social obstacles like patriarchy, the social status of women in Indian society and in the end comes out victorious. Dangal starred Aamir Khan as Mahavir Phogat, while Indian television actress, Sakshi Tanwar played his wife. The roles of Geeta and Babita were brilliantly portrayed by Fatima Sana Sheikh and Sanya Malhotra.
