Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a lockdown in the nation as a measure for the coronavirus pandemic. This was when people sitting at home started appealing to re-run the classic shows Ramayana and Mahabharat. The requests were answered and Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana was aired on DD National. A report mentioned that the show managed to grab the highest rating for a Hindi GEC show every since 2015.
It was due to the lockdown, Doordarshan brought back the shows Mahabharat and Ramayana on the channel due to public demand. The decision was taken to provide some engaging shows on TV for people who are locked at home and the fresh episodes of other shows on TV have also stopped.
The show Ramayana managed to grab 170 million viewers in the past weekend. Members of the BARC said that the viewership figures came as a surprise and the move was also appreciated by the Indian broadcasting agency Prasar Bharti. DD National has also started re-telecasting some of the other classic shows like Shaktimaan, Chanakya, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Buniyaad, Circus and Byomkesh Bakshi.
The coronavirus pandemic has affected people across the globe and measures are being taken by different countries on their own levels. In India a complete lockdown has been announced till April 14, 2020.
