Video – Akshay Kumar’s message for brothers this Rakhshabandhan, “Empower your sisters”

Akshay Kumar shares a very special bond with his younger sister Alka. On the occasion of Rakshabandhan, on August 7, 2017, the two took to social media to share their different understanding of the role of a brother and the concept of Rakshabandhan. 

In a video shared through Akshay Kumar’s channel, Dil se Direct, sister Alka shared how growing up, her brother made it very clear to her that rather than protecting her, he wanted her to take care of herself. He took a stubborn stance against their parents to empower his sister to take care of herself, physically and financially.

“Mummy-Daddy would insist that if I had to stay out late or attend a late night party then I’d have to ask Raju to accompany me. He would never go with me and always say, ‘You have to take care of your own safety.’ And I would be like, ‘Why?’ I realized the value of his words when I sent my daughter to study abroad. When she asked me if ‘Everything will be okay,’ I replied, like Raju, ‘Everything will be fine, just take care of your own safety’,” says Alka in the video.
